Testing Method
1.1 Salt Shut Out Test ? Free Film Method

(1) Making of Test Piece
RG-1 and top coating is applied according to their painting specifications, on top of a size 100 x 300 x 2mm aluminum plate with a coat of peel off sheet. After drying 24 hours at 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH, a sheet of RG-1 is peeled off and applied an under coat and preserved in the same condition for 2 days. Then, the sheet is fixed back to the aluminum plate with a coat of peel off sheet, and preserved in the same condition for another 26 days.

For the test piece that requires an accelerated deterioration test for comparison purpose, RG-1 and top coating is applied on the same size aluminum plate with a coat of peel off sheet, and is exposed under sunshine weather meter for 2,000 hours.

3 sheets of test pieces each are cut in 70 x 70mm size out of the original 100 x 300mm sheets (preserved condition and accelerated ones). The 70 x 70mm test pieces do not include any pinholes.


(2) Preserving Condition

Standard preserving condition: 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH / 28 days
Accelerated deterioration condition: Exposed under SWOM for 2,000 hours

(3) Measurement Item
a) Permeation amount of chloride ion
b) Measuring the thickness of test pieces


(4) Testing Method
The 70 x 70mm test sheets are inserted between two sheets of acrylic cells. 3% salt water is exposed to the front side of the acrylic cell, and distilled water on the other side of the acrylic cell. The above condition is kept in 20 degrees Celsius temperature for 60 days, and the distilled water is then sampled to measure the chloride ion amount.

Chloride ion is measured by automatic potential difference measuring device. Chloride ion permeation amount is measured by the following formula:

Chloride ion permeation amount (mg/cm2Eday) = V x C x 10-3 / A x 60
V: Amount of sampled distilled water (ml)
C: Chloride ion concentration (ppm)
A: Permeation area (cm2)


1.2 Salt Shut Out Test-Using Mortar Unit

(1) Making of Test Piece
Two pieces of size 70 x 300 x 10mm mortar is applied with primer, RG-1 and topcoat. Under the standard preserving condition, the mortar piece is preserved in 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH condition for 28 days. Under the accelerated deterioration condition, the mortar piece is exposed under sunshine weather meter for 2000 hours. Both ends of the two kinds of mortar pieces are disposed, and three pieces of 70 x 70 x 10mm are made as test pieces from each kinds of mortars.

The original mortar samples are made with cement: standard sand = 1:3, and 65% of water to cement. The mortar is then put into a mold for two days, preserved under 20 degrees Celsius temperature in moist air, and then taken out of the mold and preserved in 20 degrees Celsius temperature water for 5 days.

Afterwards, the mortar samples are preserved for more than 21 days in 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH condition to become a test piece. The surface where coating is applied is sanded with sandpaper (#150-240) to take off laitance.

(2) Preserving Condition
Standard preserving condition: 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH / 28 days
Accelerated deterioration condition: Exposed under SWOM for 2,000 hours

(3) Testing Method
According to the testing method indicated under 3.2.1


3. Adhesion Test

(1) Making of Test Piece
Size 70 x 70 x 20mm mortar test piece is used. The applying surface is sanded with sand paper (#150-240) to take off laitance, cleaned, and then primer, RG-1 and top coating is applied according to their painting specifications. The test piece is preserved for 28 days under 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH condition.

(2) Standard Preserving Condition
Standard preserving condition: 20 degrees Celsius / 65% RH / 28 days
Accelerated deterioration condition: Exposed under SWOM for 2,000 hours

(3) Measurement Items
a) The adhesion strength
b) Crack position

(4) Testing Method
40 x 40mm piece is cut out from the surface of the test piece, which is taken out and applied an epoxy type glue and then put back. Weight is put on top of the 40 x 40mm piece and preserved for 24 hours.

The strength of the adhesion is tested by finding out the maximum detach weight (appears in form of crack), which is done by pulling the 40 x 40mm piece out at 1,470 to 1,960 N/min (150 ? 200 kgf/min).

The adhesion strength is determined by the formula below:
A = T / 16
A: the strength of adhesion (N/mm2)
